About Us: Overview

Funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the PLANET MassCONECT study aims to test a community-based participatory research (CBPR) [definition] model for disseminating evidenced-based health programs to community groups.

PLANET MassCONECT helps community organizations like yours to strategically plan and deliver high-quality evidence-based programs [definition]. Staff at community organizations who participate in PLANET MassCONECT receive the following:

  • Institute for Community Health Program Planning (iCHPP) training workshop: participants who are accepted into the iCHPP will receive in-depth training on how to use the PLANET MassCONECT portal to select, customize, and deliver evidence-based programs in their communities,
  • educational resources to supplement the training (PLANET MassCONECT web portal and training materials),
  • networking opportunities with other iCHPP alumni from around the state to learn new skills, and
  • mini-grant opportunities.

iCHPP participants learn a new approach to planning their health programs that is driven by evaluation and evidence. The approach allows them to "customize and localize" evidence-based programs that have already been proven to work.

  • MassCONECT is a community-based participatory research project managed by the Viswanath Lab at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2005 to 2010, MassCONECT worked to reduce cancer and other health disparities in the Massachusetts cities of Boston, Lawrence, and Worcester. These same communities were the initial participants in the PLANET MassCONECT study.
